Life under lockdown is sweet for Mr Kipling

A traditional Battenberg cake is four squares of pink and yellow sponge, sandwiched together with jam and covered in marzipan. This Easter, however, it will come with a fresh twist.

Premier Foods, the FTSE 250 producer of Mr Kipling cakes and Bisto gravy, is introducing a raspberry and lemon version of the cake as it seeks to refresh its range, which has been on shop shelves since 1967.

This, coupled with a lockdown-induced rush to the grocery aisles as families stock up on treats and ingredients, will cap a strong year for a company that once seemed to be edging its way towards the corporate compost bin.

Premier reported sales of £421.5m for the 26 weeks ending September 26, a 15% rise on that period
